The beautiful Mont St Michel
Situated about one kilometer off the Normandy coast, building on this imposing Abbey commenced in 1020! It was home to Benedictine Monks until 1789 when it was turned into a prison. The high tides and quicksand make escape difficult.
In 1874 the French government assumed responsibility for the Abbey's upkeep and restoration.
