Hawksview Shearing

We had a wonderful day yesterday! We went to Hawksview Farm, nr Albury, and watched the shearing. Very Aussie :)

It was such an interesting tour of the woolshed and there was even tea with yummy cakes!

The Woolshed

Merino Sheep, waiting to feel cooler in the 34C heat!

Each shearer works at his "Stand" which is basically the spot that he stands and shears. I am sure they must have had a committee to approve that one! At Hawksview the shearer collects the sheep from a holding pen on the left and the sheep is released through the small door on the right of each shearer. There is a collection pen and release pen for each Stand. Every two hours the shawn sheep are counted and at the end of the day each shearer is paid about $2 for each sheep he has shawn.

Each shearer can shear about 200 sheep a day! Back-breaking! The shearer now hang from C shaped slings which take some of the strain off their backs.

The fleece is then thrown onto a grading table where the grader determines the quality of the fleece. All yucky bits are removed and the fleeces are then packed into bales accoring to their grade. Each bale of wool weighs 185kg.
